Material World

The layers you never see are the ones that make a roof last. Here’s what goes between the deck and the sky.

Material World · Surface Layer

XP – MAT – 001

Surface Layer

The surface is the only layer anyone sees, and the first line against Utah sun, hail, and snow. We install three surface systems — shingle, metal, and tile — each matched to the home's architecture, the roof's pitch, and how long the owner intends to stay.

Inside the Surface Layer

01

Architectural Shingle

3-tab is gone. Architectural (laminate) shingles give depth, dimension, and 25–50 year performance.

02

Metal Panels

Steel or aluminum over a solid deck. The premium surface choice for longevity.

03

Tile

Clay and concrete — Class A fire rated, heavy, and permanent when installed correctly.

Material World · The Underlayment

XP – MAT – 002

The Underlayment

Everything between the deck and the surface. This is where most roof failures start — and where corners get cut, because no one sees it after installation day. We don't treat it that way. The underlayment system is specified for Utah winters, not for the minimum the code allows.

Inside the The Underlayment

01

Ice & Water Shield

Self-adhering membrane at eaves, valleys, and penetrations. Non-negotiable in Utah winters.

02

Synthetic Felt

Modern replacement for #15 felt. Tear-resistant, UV-stable, and vapor-permeable.

03

Ventilation Layer

Ridge vents, soffit vents, and baffles sized to the attic. Undersized ventilation ends roofs early.

Material World · Flashing & Trim

XP – MAT – 003

Flashing & Trim

Water doesn't get through the middle of a roof. It gets in at the edges, the walls, and the valleys — every place two planes meet. Flashing is metalwork, done piece by piece, and it is the clearest difference between an installation and a shortcut.

Inside the Flashing & Trim

01

Step Flashing

L-shaped metal at every wall intersection. Each piece overlaps the one below. No caulk substitutes.

02

Valley Flashing

Open-cut or woven — depending on the system. This is where water concentrates.

03

Drip Edge

Aluminum drip edge at all rakes and eaves. Directs water off the deck and into the gutter.

Built into Every roof

Every system we install is built from these layers. See the five roofing systems or start with a free inspection.
