Solar Detach & Reset

Re-roofing under solar panels, without putting either warranty at risk.

The Service

How we approach it

Thousands of Salt Lake Valley homes now have solar — and every one of those roofs will eventually need replacement. A detach and reset is the right way to do it: panels and racking removed, the roof rebuilt as a complete system, mounts properly flashed into the new roof, and the array reinstalled — all coordinated with your solar installer so both your roofing warranty and your solar warranty come through intact.

The Difference

Why it's done this way

01

Both warranties protected

We coordinate the solar work with qualified installers so the panel warranty survives, and we build the roof so its warranty does too.

02

One coordinated project

We manage the sequence — detach, re-roof, reset — so you're not playing scheduler between a roofer and a solar company.

03

Mounts flashed correctly

Every roof penetration for racking gets properly flashed and sealed into the new system. Mount points are where solar roofs leak.

04

No corners cut around the array

The roof under and around the panels gets the same full system — membrane, underlayment, flashing — as the rest of the roof.

Scope of Work

What's included

01

Pre-project documentation

The array's layout, wiring, and condition documented before a single panel moves.

02

Solar installer coordination

We work with your original installer or a qualified solar partner for the electrical detach and reset.

03

Panel & racking removal

Panels and rails removed and stored safely on-site or off, protected for the duration.

04

Full roof replacement

Complete tear-off and system rebuild underneath — deck repair, membrane, underlayment, flashing, ventilation.

05

Mount flashing & sealing

Racking attachment points flashed into the new roof system, not just caulked over.

06

Panel reinstallation

Array reset to its engineered layout, torqued and aligned to spec.

07

System verification

Solar production confirmed operational and the roof walked with you at completion.

The Process

FAQs

Common questions

Why can't you just roof around the panels?

Because the roof under the array ages like the rest of it, and leaving it means a guaranteed leak under thousands of dollars of equipment. A partial roof around solar also creates seams and transitions that fail. The full detach and reset costs more up front and is the only version worth doing.

Will removing my panels void the solar warranty?

Not when it's done right. Warranties generally require qualified personnel for detach and reset work, which is exactly why we coordinate with your original installer or a qualified solar partner rather than moving panels ourselves.

How much does a detach and reset add to a re-roof?

It depends on the array size, racking type, and whether your original installer handles the reset. We include the detach and reset as a clear line item in the free estimate so you can see the full picture before deciding.

How long will my solar be offline?

Typically only the working days of the project — panels come down as the roof work starts and go back up when it's finished. For most homes that's a matter of days, and we sequence the work to keep the offline window as short as possible.

My solar company is out of business — can you still do this?

Yes. It's increasingly common. We work with qualified solar partners who can handle the detach, reset, and system verification when the original installer is no longer around.
